TEXT: This addition and preservation of a historical Coconut Grove wooden cottage literally grows and preserves the plot as it exists today.
The existing cottage (left of image above) was extended insensitively by a developer. The first maneuver on site will be to remove this extension, while preserving the historical architecture.
While the addition will be removed, the stone foundations will be preserved and integrated into the future addition. These stone elements will define interior spaces and leave a memory of the previous structure ever-present in the new
architecture. The plot will define the new architecture in a radical way.
In addition to re-purposing the old foundations, the preserved wooden roof beams, previously concealed, will be re-used in the new structure. Excavations for a new pool will augment the existing oolite on site, excavated from the ground and cut to be used in both the architecture and garden. The design will not bring in additional stone, to accentuate the presence of the existing material.
By maintaining the existing foundations, the PLOT also shapes the floor plan in a radical way.
Rather than creating a new architectural expression for the cottage, a contemporary single-story counterpart volume will be placed adjacent to the existing cottage, with an interlocking roof. This juxtaposition will frame a new garden-entry for the home.
These two structures, old and new, will define the front facade and entry sequence. While adding over 3000 sf to the existing cottage, the new home will not overwhelm the small cottage. A 2-story living volume located in the back of the property will house bedrooms above and living spaces below. Each room will have views into the central garden, which will be defined by the presence of the old foundations.
